I was 99% positive that you cannot rent a car using a prepaid visa debit card. Most will accept debit cards, just not prepaid ones.
Just to be 100% sure, I checked for Debit Card Rental Policies for the major US car rental brands:
According to their website sections on policies or terms of rental, for each company that I checked (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National Payless & Thrifty) all stated that :
prepaid credit cards, prepaid debit cards and/or gift cards are not an acceptable form of credit identification at any location for any company.
This would mean that they would not allow you to use one as a form of deposit at the beginning of your rental.
While most of the companies would accept your prepaid debit card as a method of payment at the end of the rental, when you returned the vehicle, you would still have to either get a regular debit card (one that would be attached to your checking account) and make sure to double check the terms and conditions of it's use or check into the specific cash qualification procedures and availability for the auto rental provider of your choice.
We have researched those policies as welll ... check out our Renting a Car with Cash page.
