Zurich Rent a Car
to drive into Eastern Europe

Joe asks:

Re: Zurich Rent a Car

I am planning to fly to Zurich, rent a car and drive into Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and then across to Italy and back to Zurich.

Can you recommend a rental car company that allows the vehicles to travel into these countries.

My Response:

When looking at a Zurich rent a car, it can be difficult to find the information that you're looking for directly through website information offered by the major North American car rental companies... Avis, Budget, Hertz, etc.

I recommend starting your search through AutoEurope, which gives comprehensive driving guides for rentals in Europe.

Your rental could be with one of the car rental companies mentioned above, or with a different rental company.

You will not know, in advance, which car rental company you will recieve a reservation with. The AutoEurope reservation guidelines state that they are a car rental broker and and not an independant company. When renting with them you will recieve a voucher, after you have prepaid your rental that will tell you which car rental company you'd be renting from.

You can visit AutoEurope.com or AutoEurope.ca (for Canadian Residents) and check into the Guidelines for renting in Switzerland.

Here are the basics guidelines that are listed for Zurich rent a car:

Auto Europe has special rental programs for driving into Eastern Europe.

Restricted Countries

Cars form AutoEurope that are rented in Switzerland (as in your case with a Zurich rent a car) are generally not allowed into the following countries: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine and Yugoslavia.

* NOTE: For an additional fee, travel into most or all of these countries can be arranged for specific car categories with advance notice.

If taking your rental car into Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary,Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine -- certain restrictions and fees may apply. (normally 20% to 30% more than rates, but fees will vary by location)

I hope this helps and good luck with your rental!

*Note: Car rental companies can modify policy at any time; I make every attempt to maintain up-to-date info, but always check with an individual company to verify any policy. See: Disclaimer
