Maximum Age to Rent a Car

There are a few countries that DO have some restrictions as far as the maximum age to rent a car (some restrictions are dependant on the car rental company too).

Below are the maximum age restrictions that I've researched so far -- with the US and Canada listed first and then other countries alphabetically (car rental company links open in a new window)

When checking the maximum age to rent a car, you should can check car rental websites' location specific policies. You'll usually see links to "rental conditions", "local policy", "terms of rental", "important info" or some such term during the rate quote/reservation process which should list any restrictions.

United States

For all the car rental companies I checked, there were no maximum age to rent a car restrictions for Corporate owned locations.

Licensee locations may have different policies... make sure to check local terms and conditions for the maximum age limit for car rentals at an individual location.

Canada

No car rental companies that I've researched indicate any maximum age to rent a car restrictions in Canada, but policies can be different for Licensee locations vs corporate owned locations. I recommend contacting either the rental location or a customer service rep for your preferred car rental in Canada to determine maximum age policy for specific locations.

Aruba

Alamo, Avis , Dollar, National & Thrifty - no restrictions found

Budget - lists a maximum age of 75 to rent a car

Hertz - lists a maximum age of 75 to rent a car

Australia

Alamo, Avis , Budget & Dollar - no restrictions found

Hertz - Hertz - Tasmania - drivers 75 years and over must present a medical certificate at the time of pickup.

All other Hertz locations in Australia- there is no set maximum age to rent a car, but, a medical certificate is recommended from drivers over 75. Each location will have the ability to decide if they will rent to someone over the age of 75.

National - Some locations maintain maximum age limits to rent a car, you must contact the location directly to determine their age policy

Thrifty - maximum age to rent is 79

Cyprus

Alamo - The maximum age to rent a car is 75

Avis - Maximum age listed is 70.

Budget - Maximum age 73 for all car groups.

Dollar - Charges a surcharge of EUR 17.00 per rental for drivers over 65.

Hertz - The maximum age for rentals in Cyprus is 75 years old.

National - The maximum age limit is 75

Thrifty - Charges a surcharge of EUR 17.00 per rental for drivers over 65.

Sixt - Maximum age in Cyprus is 75.

A Surcharge of EUR 5.75 per day applies for drivers between 71 and 75 years age.

Dominican Republic

Alamo - No maximum age was listed, but terms stated that "some locations may maintain upper age limits". You would have to contact your specific rental location to determine it's policy.

Avis - Listed a maximum age of 65

Budget - Maximum age is to rent a car is 80

Dollar - Maximum age to rent a car is 65 years old.

Hertz - maximum age is 70 years old.

National - No maximum age was listed, but terms stated that "some locations may maintain upper age limits". You would have to contact your specific rental location to determine it's policy.

Thrifty - no restrictions found

Sixt - Maximum age in Dominican Republic is 70 years.

Greece

Alamo, Avis , Dollar, Hertz, National & Thrifty - no restrictions found

Budget - There is a maximum age of 70

Sixt - No maximum age restrictions found

Ireland

Generally, car rental companies in Ireland maintain a max age of 75 to rent a car.

(possible exceptions):

Enterprise.com states "The minimum age is 23 years old and we do not have a maximum age limit as long as the driver has a valid driving licence." Note: Enterprise only has locations in the US, Canada, Ireland, the UK and Germany.

While researching Ireland age restrictions for Hertz I found that according to Hertz.com "Customers aged between 76 and 79 years can rent with specific conditions (you must drive on a regular basis, you will need to provide to the counter a letter from your doctor to state you have been in good health for at least 12 months and a letter from your insurance company to state you have not had an accident within the last 5 years)."

Also, in doing more research, I found a site IrishCarRentals.com that does not impose a maximum age to rent a car requirement. On their website under car rental terms and conditions they list their age requirements: "Age Requirements: The minimum age to rent a vehicle is 25 years. There is no maximum age limit."

Israel

Alamo, Avis , Hertz, National & Thrifty - no restrictions found

Budget - The maximum age restriction is 75

Dollar - Maximum rental age is 75 years

Sixt - No maximum age restrictions found

Jamaica

Avis , Dollar & Thrifty - no restrictions found

Alamo - There is a maximum age limit of 80

Budget - Maximum age limit is 65

Hertz - Maximum rental age is 70

National - Maximum age limit is 80

Sixt - No maximum age restrictions found

Morocco

Alamo, Avis , Dollar, Hertz, National & Thrifty - no restrictons found

Budget - Maximum renter age is 60

South Africa

Alamo, Avis , Budget , Hertz & National - no restrictions found

Dollar - Maximum age to rent a car is 70

Thrifty - Maximum age limit is 70 years old

Sixt - No maximum age restrictions found

Alamo, Avis , Dollar, Hertz, National & Thrifty - no restrictions found

Budget - Maximum renter age is 75

United Kingdom

Alamo - stated that there were "Some locations that maintain maximum age limits". They said you would have to check with each individual city/location. (any with restriction I know about will be listed below:)

Avis , Enterprise & Hertz - no restrictions found

Budget - Maximum driver age is 75 years. Senior Driver Surcharge for ages 70 to 75 applies = GBP 10 per day maximum of GBP 50.

Dollar - Maximum renter age is 75. Renters age 70-75 have a surcharge of 10.00 GBP per day.

National - stated that there were "Some locations that maintain maximum age limits". They said you would have to check with each individual city/location. (any with restriction I know about will be listed below:)
