My Response: Great question! Basically, you can get an upgrade one of three ways...
Keep in mind that all three of these possibilities will never guarantee you a larger car at no extra cost. Even free upgrade coupons state that the upgraded car is subject to availability at the rental counter. I would say that the easiest way to get a larger car for free, is to reserve a compact car. The car rental companies generally overbook this size class consistently and will upgrade customers to a larger car. But, also keep in mind that the rental company may ask you at the rental counter if you'd like to upgrade for x amount of dollars per day. Just say no, that you're fine with the compact. That way, if they actually don't have any compact cars, they'll have to give you a upgrade for free!! (This assumes that you would be ok with the compact car if it is available!) Hope this helps!
