Cross Border Travel
Permitted from Milan?

Edina asks:

re: Cross Border Travel

I'm planning to hire a car in Milan and drive to Hungary and back to Milan. Which car rental company will let me take the car to Croatia and Hungary?

My Response:

Checking through the terms and conditions of various rental companies, I commonly found that

Cross Border Travel is generally allowed to:

Austria
Belgium
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Italy
Luxembourg
Netherlands
Norway
Portugal
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
United Kingdom

and

Generally NOT allowed to:

Albania
Belarus
Croatia
Czech Republic
Finland
Hungary
Poland
Slovak Republic
Slovenia
Russia
Estonia
Lithuania
Ukraine
Moldova
Romania
Bulgaria
Greece
Turkey
Asia
Serbia
Bosnia
Montenegro
Macedonia
Kosovo

Hertz was a little bit different with regards to cross border travel into Croatia:

Hertz vehicles cannot be driven into and/or dropped off in any African, Asian, or Middle-East countries, nor in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.

Hertz vehicles MAY be driven into Slovenia and/or Croatia but renters must inform the pick-up location in order to get permission to take the rental inot Slovenia or Croatioa and to get the authorization that would have to be provided to customs authorities.

I did find a car rental company called Kemwel(kemwel.com) and while searching through their cross border driving policies from rentals in Italy I found:

Kemwel has developed a special program with it's suppliers that will allow for travel into select Eastern European countries. Additional surcharges may apply for these types of rentals.

I hope this information was useful to you and good luck with your trip!

*Note: Car rental companies can modify policy at any time; I make every attempt to maintain up-to-date info, but always check with an individual company to verify any policy. See: Disclaimer
