Cross Border Travel from Milan?

Edina asks:

re: Cross Border Travel

I'm planning to hire a car in Milan and drive to Hungary and back to Milan. Which car rental company will let me take the car to Croatia and Hungary?

My Response:

I did some research about this topic for a variety of providers of car hire companies in Europe.

 Checking through the terms and
conditions of various rental
companies, I commonly found that

and Generally NOT allowed to:

Slovak Republic

Moldova
Romania
Bulgaria
Greece
Turkey
Asia
Serbia
Bosnia

Slovenia
Russia
Estonia
Lithuania
Montenegro
Macedonia
Kosovo
Ukraine

Hertz

(opens in a new window) was a little bit different with regards to cross border travel into Croatia:

Hertz vehicles CANNOT be driven into and/or dropped off in any African, Asian, or Middle-East countries, nor in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.

Hertz vehicles MAY be driven into and dropped off in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia (Ljubljana only), Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom (islands not included).

Hertz vehicles CANNOT be driven in any of the East European countries with the exception of Croatia where the transit may only be allowed with written authorization from the rental location.  The authorization form will be given at the time of pick-up and attached to the rental agreement.

Hertz vehicles MAY NOT be taken on ferries from any Italian Harbour with destination Croatia.

I did find a car rental company called Kemwel (kemwel.com) and while searching through their cross border driving policies from rentals in Italy I found that they state they have a special program with it's suppliers that will allow for travel into select Eastern European countries  (Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey & Ukraine) with additional charges and restrictions.  They state that the extra fees are normally add an extra 20% to 30% more to your  rates, but can vary by location.

I hope this information was useful to you and good luck with your trip!
