Car Rental Extensions

Car rental extensions are required if you are in a rental car and need to return it later than specified on your contract. Some companies require you to call your rental location directly, while others have a dedicated line that will be able to assist you in extending your rental car.


Remember, that the original rate of rental (per day) is not necessarily the guaranteed rate per day for the extended portion of the rental. Make sure to check your contract or call to check on the extra charges, when doing car rental extensions.

Here are some company specific policies and guidelines for extending your rental car:

Alamo

If you need to extend your car rental, you should call Alamo at 1 (800) 462-5266

Their website policy guides states that: If the vehicle is kept longer than originally planned, a daily overstay fee may be apply. This late fee is in addition to any extra daily/weekly rates. Your rental agreement or car rental contract will specify if any late fees will apply and will specify if rates are subject to retroactively change. (ie, if the rate will change for the whole rental period or just for the extra days)

Avis

If you need to extend your rental car, you must call the rental location directly. The location’s phone number appears on your rental agreement.

On Avis.com , (opens in a new window) gives the following information with regards to extending your rental:

a service fee of $10 will apply and your your original daily rental rate may change. You must call in to extend your rental. If you don't notify Avis that you will be keeping the vehicle longer then expected within 7 hours of your originally scheduled return time to extend your rental, a $10/day late fee will apply.

Budget

If you need to extend your rental period, you should call call Budget Reservations at 800-527-0700. If you are not in the U.S., you can find the appropriate Budget phone number for calling within other countries on Budget.com

The Budget.com (opens in a new window) policy guide states:

A service fee of $10 will apply and your original per-day rental rate may change. If within 7 hours of your originally scheduled return time you don't call to extend your rental, a $10/day late fee will apply.

Dollar

If you need to extend your rental period, you must contact the car rental location where you picked up the rental vehicle to receive authorization and find out about additional costs you might incur. The phone number to the location, on your rental contract.

Also, on Dollar.com (opens in a new window), the policy guide states: A Return Change Fee of $15 will apply if you return 24 hours or more prior to your reserved return date and time. If you return 24 hours or more after your scheduled return date and time, a Return Change Fee of $10.99 per day will apply ($54.95 max.), in addition to any other rental charges.

Enterprise

According to Enterprise.com (opens in a new window), if you have already picked up your vehicle, and are looking at extending your rental car period, you will need to contact the office that you rented from directly. This phone number would be on your rental contract or found on their website for the rental location.

Fox

For a car rented at the Fox location at PHX, rental extensions must be done in person, directly at the location.

Renters can extend their rental either through FoxRentaCar.com (opens in a new window) rental extensions or by calling 1-310-641-3838 ext. 414.

When extending a rental car from Fox, the rate will increase by an extra $10 per day for each day after the orginally scheduled return date, until the vehicle is returned.

You will need to call the Hertz Rental Extensions department at 1-800-654-4174, which is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week

Note: According to Hertz.com, If you are just extending a rental for one day past the original due date, and are making no other changes, you do not need to call Hertz Rental Extensions. You will be charged the extra day price that appears on your rental agreement or rental contract.

Note: In addition to the daily rate, some locations will charge you a $10.99 per/day “late return” fee if you return the vehicle more than 24 hours after the return date and time specified on the rental agreement.
