Can an Additional Driver be Added for Part of a Rental

Alan asks:

If a primary driver has a one month car rental, can an additional driver be added for part of a rental, (say, three days in my case) and only be charged for that period?

Also what are the rates for extra authorized drivers in Florida?

My Response:

I contacted reps from Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty and here's what I found:

Note: The additional drivers fees listed are those found the date of the research to answer this question. Fees can change at any time. Always check with your car rental company of choice to verify any extra driver charges.   All company links open in new windows.

Alamo

The Alamo rep that I spoke with said that it is possible... she said that you would need to take the additional driver into the rental location and sign them on the day you want them to be able to drive. Your contract would be modified and the other driver added. Then, when you don't want any more extra drivers, you would have to go back into the location and have the driver removed and have the contract redone again.

For Alamo, the fee for added drivers in Florida is $9.99 per day extra.

Avis

When I asked whether or not an additional driver be added for part of a rental, the Avis representative that I spoke with said that once extra drivers are signed on, they are signed on for the entire remaining rental period, but that there was a maximum charge that would apply:

there is a fee of $13 per day per additional driver in Florida, with a maximum charge of $65 per rental for one extra authorized driver.

Budget

When looking to see if an additional driver be added for part of a rental, The Budget rep I spoke to confirmed that they have the same rules and added driver fee as Avis... see above.

Dollar

The Dollar rep that I spoke with said that it is possible... she said that you would need to take the driver into the rental location and sign them on the day you want them to be able to drive. Your contract would be modified and the driver added. Then, when you don't want any more added drivers, you would have to go back into the location and have the extra driver removed and have the contract redone again.

For Dollar, the fee for additional drivers in Florida is $9.99 per day extra.

Enterprise

According to the Enterprise rep I spoke to, you can add the driver on at any location in the middle of the rental, then stop back in a branch to have the driver removed. A new contract would need to be signed each time.

The additional driver charge for Florida is $10.00 extra per day for each additional authorized driver other than the renter.

Hertz

When checking to see if an additional driver be added for part of a rental, the rep that I spoke with confirmed that once additional drivers are signed on, they are signed on for the entire remaining rental period, but that there was a maximum charge that would apply: For Hertz, the additional driver fee for Florida is $13.00 per day, up to a maximum of $91.00 per rental for each authorized additional driver.

National

The rep that I spoke with said that you must take the additional driver into the rental location and sign them on the day you want them to be able to drive. Your contract would be modified and the additional driver added. Then, when you don't want any more  drivers, you would have to go back into the location and have the extra driver removed and have the contract redone again.

The additional driver fee in Florida is an extra $10 per day.

Thrifty

The representative that I spoke to wasn't able to access specific information... he stated that you would have to speak with someone at a local location in order to verify extra authorized driver policy and fees... he stated that that information was specific to the location; he tried to contact them for more than 10 minutes, but the line was busy.
